Francesco Toraldo

1960-1975- On 09/11/1960 Francesco Toraldo was born in Catanzaro, his parents Elvira and Enzo were both painters. Since he was a little boy with a rebellious, impetuous and sensitive character Francesco showed huge interest in painting. In fact, as a three years old boy, he spent many hours of the day in his father's studio, handling his colors, watching him while he was painting, until one day, his father put a stool under his feet, gave him a brush and placed a canvas in a small easel, made especially for him and told him that he could paint. According to the stories of his father and his friends, many well-known artists such as: the painter Mimmo Rotella, Enrico Benaglia, they all admired little Toraldo's talent, which already seemed to be extraordinary. He had a passion for colors and their many shades captivated him, reds and blues became immediately his favorite ones. The young Toraldo grew up showing a little interest in study and a huge interest in life, the truest life ... the street life, the clandestine gambling dens, the "bad companies", the smoky clubs, the street women. In his father's study, his hunger for life was transformed into art, the emotions he drew from his experience allowed his style to detached more and more from canons, imposed on him by his father who was obsessed with technical perfection, and indulge in an instinctuality without rules and dictates. After the middle school, Francesco started the artistic high school of Catanzaro. In a few years, the conflicts with the teachers became more frequent and the confrontations more and more heated. Francesco didn’t believe that art should be taught, that an idea represented on the canvas was a "betrayed idea", especially if he had to submit to strict and precise canons and rules. So he dropped out of academic studies and became a self-taught. His father had provided him both theoretical and practical teaching, which served him to understand that his talent, starting from those "dictates" and "rules", had to be free and very personal.

Francesco, seeking his artistic identity, far from the rules, at 19 was already husband and father. At 21 he had two children and a job that had nothing to do with art. His painting upset him, he couldn’t manifest himself as he wanted, the energy inside him sometimes was exploding like a volcano to calm immediately after, his life was a mixture of experiences and emotions, which once exhausted were leaving him with a bad taste in the mouth.

1975-1992 - He moved to Catania, where he underwent the charm of Renato Gattuso. He began to move on the canvas in a way that brought him closer to the great artist, in sync with the perpetual motion of Etna, animated by a new energy. He experimented with the use of spatulas, he used them as brushes and his "real painting" had a new "beginning". He was almost forty years old and color, like the magma of "his volcano", flowing on the canvas, was shaped by spatulas and came to life.

He exhibited in Genoa, Rome and Lecce. Although he does another job to live, painting absorbs almost all his energies.

1993 His first solo show in Catania at the Lemonade Gallery obtains a good critical and public success. The exhibitions follow in Chianciano Terme (SI) at the Chianciano Art Gallery and, once again in Catania at Palazzo del Toscano.

Pescara seems to want to sanction the adoption of Toraldo, who has chosen to live there with his family. In April, Francesca Romana was born from the union with the actress Nadia Rinaldi. In May, the Marano Art Gallery inaugurates the new Crotone exhibition venue with a personal exhibition. In June the Giulianova Art Museum of Splendor dedicates to the artist a personal exhibition of 25 unpublished works that favor the theme of sport. Sicily. These are difficult months for him, but he agrees to participate in two art fairs in Piacenza and Cremona. In November he exhibites at the Calcagno Gallery in Catania. The Museum of Sacred Art of Rivisondoli (L'Aquila) acquires his second work and organizes a personal exhibition to be held in September. At the invitation of the Municipal Administration of Licata at the "Re Grillo" Theater on the occasion of the inauguration of the "Rosa Balestrieri" music school, a solo exhibition of the maestro is inaugurated. It is a difficult period in the artist's family and affective sphere. But Toraldo extracts the strength and the reason for his artistic inspiration from his suffering, his work is itself the panacea and the sublimation of his riots. Almost for a superstitious game, in spite of so much inner darkness, his painting becomes alive with new colors. But above all, it is the encounter with Rosanna, his current companion who suggests new perspective lines that animate his life with a new light and which are reflected in his most recent works. So the artist takes the decision to reside permanently in Sicily in a historical-artistic glimpse unique in the world: Agrigento. The new enthusiasm leads Toraldo to start a period of intense and laborious experimentation. He resumes working on paper after many years, which amuses him and makes him feel free. By his own statement "on paper my language is free from any rhetoric and the sign does not take into account any rational principle". In this new context, new collaborations take shape that will bring Toraldo back into the national limelight, participating in 2016 in various exhibitions in different cities, including Cremona, Palermo in "Passions on the move" at the Galleria Raffaello and Salerno with "La vita dei colorei" at Genoese palace. He is invited to exhibit collectively in Venice with the Mazzoleni Foundation.
